About Machu Picchu
- Machu Picchu is located in Peru, which was formally known as Cusco, between the two summits of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu.
- Sometimes Machu Picchu is known by the name 'The Lost City of the Incas' because it remained lost for many years. It was built by the Incan People who belonged to the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. This majestic city is a reminder of their great achievements.
- It is believed that the city of Machu Picchu was built in approximately 1450 AD at the height of the Incan Empire.
- It is thought that the city wasn't inhabited for very long as researchers believe Machu Picchu was wiped out by disease by 1572. It is thought that smallpox was introduced by Spanish conquers (called conquistadors) who came to the region. As Machu Picchu remained mostly undamaged, it's thought that the conquistadors didn't reach or discover the city. They damaged temples and sacred stones in other areas which had been built by the Incan Empire.
- The city of Machu Picchu consisted of different types of buildings including sanctuaries, temples, thatched houses and various features of which around 140 still remain.
- As the city of Machu Picchu was built so high up and surrounded by terraces and steep walls it was well protected and hidden from potential attackers.
- Machu Picchu attracts tourism from all over the world. It is Peru's biggest tourist spot. People visit from all over to view the fabulous work and talent of the Incan Empire.
